Summer Mosquito Season Brings
Threat of West Nile Virus

The number of mosquitoes are on the rise and those of us who reside in Central and Southwest Virginia should be on alert as this pest becomes an unwelcome part of our outdoor life.  Now is the time to prepare for the summer season that will certainly see a large number of these pests in and around our yards and gardens.

We're all painfully aware a bite brings with it itching, redness and localized swelling. But the real concern is the insects' ability to carry West Nile Virus (WNV). We don't want to be alarmists but the WNV does give reason for heightened concern.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 5,387 human cases of WNV in 2012, and 243 of which were fatal.  WNV occurs in wild birds with mosquitoes spreading the virus from infected birds to people through bites.

Fortunately most of us who are bitten by a mosquito infected with the WNV will see little to no problem with the disease. Approximately 20 percent will experience a mild level of illness and only 1 in 150 will contract the more severe form of the disease.

Summer is just around the corner but it's never too early to begin a program of abatement and personal protection.... protection for you and your pets.  Doing so will contribute to preventing the spread of WNV.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
What Should Be Done
ELIMINATE BREEDING AREAS
One of the first things we can do is eliminate all areas or containers where you see standing water.  It only takes an inch or so of water for mosquitos to breed.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
When outside wear long sleeve shirts, long pants and use a repellent sprayed on any exposed skin and lightly over clothing. You should use repellent even if you're only going outside for a few minutes. It only takes one bite to get West Nile virus. Many of the mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus bite between dusk and dawn. If you're outside during these hours pay special attention to using repellent.

As a "rule of thumb":

  • For many hours outside (over 3-4 hours) and/or where biting is very intense-use a repellent containing more than 20% DEET. And more is not better as products with more than 50% DEET do not offer additional protection.
  • For shorter periods of time, repellents containing less than 20% DEET or one of the products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus may provide adequate protection.
OUTDOOR - LAWN & GARDEN CONTROL
The Candle and Citronella Approach
We have a number of options for the control of mosquitos. Our Bite-LiteŽ Candles offer highly effective mosquito repellent with the added benefit of a pleasant aroma of lemongrass and spearmint.  Bite-LiteŽ Candles can be used on patios, balconies, backyard dining areas or other outdoor living areas.

To enjoy maximum protection, you should light these unique and effective candles 20 minutes before sitting outdoors, and place them in and around the area you want to protect. A simple guideline is "If you can smell the candle, you are protected. If you can't, light another candle".

A Highly Effective and VERY Safe Method

You can also consider using a VERY EFFECTIVE liquid pesticide called TALSTAR. This product is odorless and very safe for use around the kids and the pets.  It can be applied indoors, outside on the lawn and on shrubs where mosquitoes are found.  TALSTAR is labeled to kill 76 different insects and is a great product to use for the control of fleas and ticks.  And TALSTAR continues to work for months.

Organic Products Offer an Effective Alternative

We carry a number of organic products for the control of insects and one of the best is ICT Organics' Essential-1.  It kills & repels mosquitoes, fleas ticks and more.  In dry weather it can keep mosquitoes away for up to 2 weeks. The product works on termites as well and it is very effective and safe to use where children or pets play.

Products for Standing Water
One way to lower the mosquito numbers in your area is to dump standing water, because this is the place mosquitoes breed.  But sometimes you don't want to dump the water from your ponds or birdbaths.

For ponds and bird baths we offer Mosquito Dunks.  This product is shaped like a doughnut, can be broken up to fit the gallon size of your pond.

Mosquito Dunks are:

  • Non-toxic to all other wildlife , pets, fish, and humans.
  • Quick to work and long lasting - ills within hours and lasts for 30 days or more.
  • Labeled For organic gardening by the USEPA.
  • Highly effective and low impact.
